Student Life

We believe in developing young people holistically and create opportunities for them to put their learning from the curriculum into action. They have the opportunity to experience the full vibrancy of Academy life through participating in a wide range of activities that develop their individual interests and talent and encourage their personal, social and emotional growth.

Find out about our sports, creative activities, and how your child can put their skills to use for others in their service learning projects, join our residential programme, have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester, and see how our wellbeing team supports our students.

Through this video by Agence Française de Développement (AFD), we see how our students at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo dare to dream big in the state-of-the-art facilities they have access to.

Since it opened its doors in 2013, AKA Maputo has been growing. In 2018, new facilities were opened, including bigger classrooms, extended outdoor play areas, a library, an art room and a science lab.

A typical day at AKA Mombasa

Sophia Talerico
A day in the life of residential student Sophia Talerico.
“Students at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa are enhanced by the Academy’s great pluralistic approaches and cultural aspects in this one-of-a-kind residential school where there is a learning opportunity at every step. The dorms become your second home, and we are surrounded by a supportive and secure community. No day goes by without an abundance of physical activities, from the early mornings at 5:45 AM with swimming, basketball, running, football, and yoga being some of the exciting wake-up drills we have. We are then rewarded with a spectacular, delicious meal of croissants, scrambled eggs, pancakes (my personal favourite), and sausages by 7:00 AM. A school day typically ends at 3:30 PM and is followed by a variety of extracurricular activities. I enjoy Debate Class and Presidential Awards in which I can synthesize information, evaluate, and share my arguments with my peers and enhance my skills through challenging obstacles. Additionally, on certain days, I spend my time working at our Tuck-Shop where we sell a variety of snacks and provide the best services to all our students.  By 6:15 PM, dinner is served. I particularly enjoy BBQ nights every Sunday where we’re served with tasty, grilled mishkaki (beef skewers) with hot wedges, and every Friday night, you’ll get the cheesiest pizza ever! Dinner time is a great time to catch up with friends, tell stories and have fun! The residential programme always provides events every weekend such as Capture the Flag, Movie Night, Pool Party, Dance Night and so much more. You will never find yourself bored. Our days are always filled with exciting experiences which make you feel empowered to try out different things. I have grown so much as an individual by being part of the Academy. Every day is certainly a new adventure.” Sophia Talerico, DP 2, Aga Khan Academy Mombasa

Being a leader in the student council - change to JS SRC story or have 2 stories

I feel very privileged to have been elected and to have served as Student Representative Council (SRC) President of the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa. Providing leadership to create school unity and ensuring students’ well-being within the Academy’s pluralistic ethos was an honour. Serving as a bridge for understanding between students, teachers and other stakeholders enhanced my communication skills. Working with the SRC executive and during general assemblies, I developed skills to engage people in sharing ideas and decision-making. I also learnt to facilitate to ensure that everyone has  an equal opportunity to make contributions and develop leadership skills. Listening to diverse perspectives required me to be open-minded and make fair and ethical decisions. This leadership approach helped students to feel comfortable talking to me and ask me for guidance. I had to be a role model by maintaining a balance with my studies and other activities.  A memorable experience as SRC President was developing and introducing a new voting system. When COVID-19 forced us out of school, my adaptability skills were put to test. I had responsibility to quickly switch to virtual SRC meetings and to prepare for a virtual transition of the next SRC. I continue to apply in my university life the organisation and self-management skills I developed as SRC President. In today’s ever-changing world, developing ethical leaders, with a commitment to those they serve, is key to inspiring progress. Serving as SRC President at the Academy has helped me to become a leader within this ethos.” Azaan Sayani, Class of 2020, Aga Khan Academy Mombasa

"We must... infuse our students with what I would call three “A’s” of modern learning - the spirit of anticipation, the spirit of adaptation and the spirit of adventure. This will happen best in learning environments which are both serious and focused on the one hand, but which are also joyous and inspiring places, operating on the cutting edge of pedagogy and knowledge."
