Academic Programme

At the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, we unite the rigorous IB curriculum, an exceptional residential experience and the knowledge, skills and attitudes designed to create globally minded, locally rooted, ethical leaders.

Our Curriculum

We offer our students the internationally recognised International Baccalaureate (IB) programme of study which builds a solid core of knowledge and develops open-minded, principled, reflective and inquiring learners. Each programme is tailored to your child’s age; the IB Primary Years Programme for junior students for Grades 1-5, the Middle Years Programme for Grades 6-10 and the Diploma Programme in the last two years of school.

We weave and develop in the unique Aga Khan Curricular Strands, which help students understand key issues from local and global perspectives. We support students to put the philosophy of ethics and pluralism into practice with leadership training, service learning and an array of activities – all in a demographically, socioeconomically and linguistically diverse environment.

"Working with the SRC executive, I developed skills to engage people in sharing ideas and making decisions. I also learnt to facilitate to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to make contributions and develop leadership skills"
Azaan Sayani, Class of 2020 SRC President, Aga Khan Academy Mombasa

Our Pedagogy

Student reading a book in the Junior School library
While stretching students’ intellect with our academic programme, we ensure that they are prepared for the future with an interdisciplinary approach suited to real-world problem solving. They learn independently with self-directed, reflective work. But they also collaborate with classmates across the Academies, and with local communities, to instigate positive change. Students become literate in technology and computing, with opportunities to increase their proficiency in music and the arts. We teach in English and Kiswahili to deepen students’ understanding of the home culture in which they are studying. Grade 9 students have the opportunity to study in another country for a semester.

Learning During COVID-19

We have provided education, support and community for students throughout the pandemic, using online technologies tailored to our students’ needs and helping students adapt to social distancing on campus. Meanwhile, our students and alumni across the Network have seized the chance to help their communities cope.
