Developing a balanced lifestyle
The Academy encourages sports as part of our students’ holistic education and healthy lifestyle.

Sports

Students have the chance to try many sports, both competitive and non-competitive. From Grades 1 to 10 they have timetabled Health and Physical education lessons which introduces them to a wide range of skills, knowledge and understand of individual and team sports and personal fitness. They might train in athletics, learn dance or a martial art or join a sports team. In later years they are able to focus on developing expertise in a few areas, taking on leadership and coaching responsibilities. The Academy engages external coaches for training in swimming and basketball daily, before and after school for students who wish to participate.

The AKA Mombasa campus features swimming and diving pools, grass and Astroturf sports fields, gymnasium, dance studio, and facilities for cricket, tennis, squash, badminton, volleyball, basketball and netball.

Swimming for my country

Kirunda Kinuthia at the CANA Zone III Championships in 2019.
“I joined the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa in 2017 and a large part of my decision to join involved swimming. I had full confidence that I could continue my studies and continue to train in swimming. One thing that helped my swimming was the facilities on campus. I obviously spent a lot of time in the pool, but the team also spent time in the gym working on our strength and conditioning. During our gym sessions we’d use the weight room for strength training and the Multi Purpose Hall (MPH) for our core exercises, both of which helped a lot in my swimming. Living on campus made a much quicker to get to dorms or the Commons for dining with the added benefit of getting to see the beautiful sunrises and sunsets after a training session.  Being part of the team had a very communal and special feeling associated with it, one that you don’t really get anywhere else. Working hard together in the pool allowed us to create strong bonds that helped us support each other both in and out of the pool.  We also got to learn from each other and create great memories at competitions. Overall I loved the experience and learned a lot from both my coaches and from the swimmers that I trained with.  It was thanks to the combination of expert coaching and world-class facilities that I was selected to represent Kenya at the East African Secondary School Games. I was also the boys’ captain for team Kenya at the Confédération Africaine de Natation (CANA) Zone 3 Swimming Championships where I won six medals. CANA is the Continental Association charged with overseeing swimming for Africa. It was a humbling and fulfilling experience, and I learned a lot from it. After graduating from the Academy, I took a gap year to focus on swimming and achieve the necessary times to train and compete at my university.” Kirunda Kunyiha, Class of 2019, Aga Khan Academy Mombasa

My basketball family

Joy Alendi posing for a photo at the mph after victory at sub-county basketball games.
“If someone told me I would be a part of the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa basketball team four years ago, I would have laughed. But reflecting on that statement now, I think to myself that my life would feel sort of incomplete without basketball in it.  Growing up as a competitive swimmer, the shift into the world of basketball was anything but easy. Each and every practice chipped away my pride and forced me to relearn myself as an athlete and as a person. Fortunately, I have supportive coaches and teammates who hold me accountable and keep pushing me to reach the potential they see in me. I am beyond lucky to be a part of a team that makes me feel like I’m a part of a family on and off of the basketball court.  I am also grateful for the facilities at the Academy that have allowed me to work on my craft, blow off some steam when I needed to or simply just play a game against a teammate. Each one of these things, along with the unity and lessons of teamwork from my coaches, continuously strengthens my love of basketball as a sport. Basketball has also helped me develop skills that I can use in my academic and personal life. It has enabled me to see the importance of relationships, communication and strategy. I now find it easier to think on my feet, plan and communicate more effectively, which in turn has helped me to become well rounded in all aspects of my life.” Joy Alendi, Grade 10 student, Aga Khan Academy Mombasa
