Growing together
Residential life complements and extends the academic experience with a broad range of activities and opportunities to enhance students’ learning and growth.

Residential Life

Students enjoy a warm and supportive campus environment within a culture based on respect, integrity, honesty, fairness, empathy and good humour. Our world-standard facilities are set within surroundings designed to offer students all they need to learn and grow.

Through a supportive environment, residential students at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa learn how to become more independent, form strong bonds with their residential families and participate in service projects with community partners.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The residential programme is essential to the mission and vision of the Academy in creating students who are prepared to take on leadership roles within their communities. It is important that they are steeped in a pluralistic culture that promotes these values.

Many of the most important elements of an education – the development of practical leadership skills, the capacity to make ethical judgments, the ability to navigate through complex cultural settings – are formed outside the classroom. Mealtimes and other gatherings provide the opportunity for students to talk, study and relax with each other. The residences provide secure and well supervised accommodation in single, double and quad rooms. Our residential programme enables students to continue building these connections with others, as well as to take advantage of the facilities and activities on offer.

We offer them the opportunity to become proficient in creative and physical activities as well as in their academic studies and service projects. Find out more about the sports, expression activities  and service learning elements of student life.

"With pride, I can say that my residential life is reminiscent of being at home with my family. Being in the residential programme has helped me become more independent, responsible and most of all pluralistic. I really enjoy being around people who are from different backgrounds to form one big family. The Academy is like my second home because of the hospitality and love received from the entire residential community."

A Home From Home

Residential Capitan Kandafula Sikana Residential students from varying backgrounds and locations, form strong bonds with each other.
We host our students on a secure campus, with appropriate safeguards on and off site. They learn independence in many ways, from time management to doing their laundry, but have a supportive system of advisors, residential parents, and other staff to rely on, and plenty of opportunities to communicate with their families. Growing and learning through the residential programme

Residential Capitan Kandafula Sikana Being a part of the residential programme since Grade 9 inspired Kandafula Sikana to become a residential captain so she could support and mentor younger students joining the programme.
“Being a Residential Captain has definitely played a part in defining my identity. I’ve always known that I have the support of my Residential Parents and fellow Captains, but I soon realised that there are several skills I needed to perfect on my own, including time management. However, collaborating with my peers, organising events, being a mentor and acting as a bridge between the residential students and our residential staff and the ability to collaborate and share different ideas has been such a rewarding experience. On an individual level, I have learnt how to be calm and efficient in critical situations as well as how to be a shoulder to lean on. Best of all, I have learnt how to plan good events to enhance the social life of residential students and provide them with a holistic school experience. Not only do these skills prepare me for adult life, but they allow me to have a rich experience as well. This includes the open-minded, caring and reflective nature I have developed in my time as a Residential Captain, which I have used to express my passion for several contemporary issues such as gender inequality with the Gender, Media and Culture (GMC) enrichment. I am grateful for this leadership opportunity and will always carry the skills I have gained from it with me.” Kandafula Sikana, Class of 2021, Aga Khan Academy Mombasa
