Looking ahead
Senior students at AKA Mombasa are prepared for their university and careers through different resources, internships and university counselling.

Career Preparation

As students progress through the Diploma Programme, we help them prepare for life after school. We organise internships, provide comprehensive university counselling and offer career guidance to enable them and their families to plan ahead.

Experiencing the World of Work

DP1 students may apply for an internship over their July and August break, gaining essential workplace experience, university application material and career inspiration. Previous students have contributed to their local AKDN agencies and other grass-level NGOs, volunteering in medical, financial, tourism and educational fields as well as more specialist areas. This year, the pandemic meant that students could take virtual internships abroad, closely aligned to their interests.

“This experience provided me with a phenomenal opportunity to gain theoretical knowledge from professionals, explore potential career paths, learn about workplace culture and employee relations that would help me in my professional career. It also played a formative role in my personal growth as it equipped me with a range of skills.”

University Counselling

We have dedicated university counsellors who work with staff, students and their families to navigate the application process, connect with university admissions staff and apply for scholarships.

Throughout their Grade 10 and Diploma Programme years, our university counsellors provide various opportunities and resources for students to prepare them for their university careers:

Grade 10

  • We help students choose their subjects of study according to their strengths and goals
  • We guide students through exploratory and reflective exercises to discover and articulate their strengths

Diploma Programme 1 (Grade 11)

  • We help students understand the application processes in different countries, and to shortlist universities and courses
  • We facilitate visits from university representatives, who discuss their offerings with students
  • We offer workshops for families on funding university studies, and help students consider appropriate options
  • Through workshops and individual assistance, we help students craft essays and complete forms for university applications, create resumes and practise their interview skills

Diploma Programme 2 (Grade 12)

  • We nominate students for scholarships, both Academy-specific and global
  • We assist students to select a university, apply for visas and navigate other steps
“From leading in spaces like university lecture halls and laboratories to forging their paths in start-up companies and in public and private sector firms, our graduates confidently navigate the ‘real world’ with the skills and dispositions gained from their education at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa.”

Aaryan Ajani, who joined the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa in 2016, received one of four scholarships by the Aga Khan Academies to Concordia University to study Politics and Economics. For Aaryan, receiving the scholarship came as a huge relief. “It was quite intense having to deal with such uncertainty, especially because I knew there were other students who were equally deserving of the opportunity,” Aaryan said. “When I got the news, I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders because I knew my future is potentially secured.” Aaryan believes the immense growth he exhibited during his two years in the International Baccalaureate Programme is why he was selected as one of the recipients of the scholarship. “Through the Academy’s extra-curricular scheme, I got to develop my leadership skills in the Service Learning programme as well as a soccer coach and member of the Student Representative Council. Academically, I was able to identify my weaknesses and worked really hard to make sure I was able to succeed as an all-round student,” Aaryan said. Looking forward to life at university, Aaryan intends to make the most of this opportunity to succeed. “I personally believe that every student is remarkable and has the potential to achieve anything at their own means,” Aryan said. “I consider this a massive stepping stone to the greater things I can achieve in the future and I will always be grateful for my life-changing experience at the Academy.”
