Empowering teachers to nurture leaders
Empowering teachers to nurture leaders
From his university days, Karim Ismail knew he wanted to work with young people and has not looked back since. Grateful for the experiences during his education, he felt compelled to share the love for learning amongst youngsters and recreate those experiences for students around the world.
“Understanding how I could ensure that other students get similar opportunities to build their character and personality made it an easy career decision,” he shared on his choice to become a teacher.
Karim’s journey as a teacher and school leader has taken him all over the world including Kenya, Uganda, India, South Africa and Mozambique to name a few. He was working at an International Baccalaureate (IB) institution when he was recruited as one of the founding teachers of the Senior School at the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad. Having worked for the Academies and other IB institutions in various leadership capacities, Karim now joins the AKA Maputo as the Senior School Principal.
“Students have huge potential to become leaders. And our teachers, in my opinion, are the only way we’re going to achieve that. They are the key drivers of change. They’re going to influence minds. They’re going to be the relationship holders with that student body. And so my role is very much to give the teachers what they need, provide that space and encouragement, be that support and give them resources to allow them to do that job to the best of their capability.”

Ensuring safety and happiness on AKA Maputo buses
The sun is creeping its way out from the horizon, birds are beginning to chirp and there is a slight coolness in the air. It is 6 am in Maputo, Mozambique and it is the time Ernesto Matavel begins his daily route as a bus driver for the Aga Khan Academy Maputo.
“When the day begins I feel happy,” Ernesto said. “It is a fresh start to a new day.”
Ernesto began working at AKA Maputo in 2014 and has seen the evolution of the Academy as it continues to expand and develop. However, for Ernesto, the Academy is not the only thing that has been growing over the years.
“When I started at the Academy there was only a small building and now it has grown so much. Having said that, I have also gotten the opportunity to grow personally and professionally.”
When the Academy reopened for in-person learning due to COVID-19, Ernesto felt confident of the safety measures put in place.
“The Academy has done a fantastic job not only in safeguarding the students, but also the staff members like myself.”
By 2.50 pm Ernesto ends his bus route and anticipates for the next day. Although not everything is the same as it was prior to the pandemic, Ernesto is happy to be back with the AKA Maputo community, which he calls his group of friends.
“I like the work I do because I am able to do it with no problem. The community at the Academy makes me feel like we are all friends.”
