“As I begin to reminisce and write about the years in the Aga Khan Academy in Hyderabad, the piercing call of a lone peacock from amidst the landscape of giant boulders that welcomed me in the city years ago, echoed loud in my ears. Hyderabad city, its glorious weather, the lack of the usual urban anxieties, the warmth in the simplicity of its people, the tranquil serenity of the school campus, and the lasting relationship with Biryani had sealed my calling to being a teacher in this school. The initial years were spent facilitating the pre-teens through their units of inquiry. The organic curiosity in children, their sincere joys in discovery, their folded hands and bowed heads in prayer, the profundity in their perceptions and the hours of watching them engaged in free- play, turned the teacher in me to a learner. My little students in this school taught me to respect the environment, love nature, and be resilient. Through these years, the journey with the students and their transitions, the traffic of diverse dialects and thoughts, the fascinating change in worldviews in students after Student Exchange Programme, the cultural pride displayed in celebrations, friends turning into family in the residences and the slices of the real world displayed in our student community, deepened my connect with the inspiring mission and vision of our school. In my engagement with the young adults in year eleven and twelve in the recent years, their rigorous pursuit of academic excellence and dreams for the future makes me remember this famous couplet of the Urdu poet Makhdoom Mohiuddin: hayāt le ke chalo kā.enāt le ke chalo chalo to saare zamāne ko saath le ke chalo [Take life with you, take creation with you. If you have to keep moving, take the whole world with you.]” Arpita Chakraborty, English Language and Literature teacher, Aga Khan Academy HyderabadEnsuring safety and happiness on AKA Maputo buses
Ensuring safety and happiness on AKA Dhaka buses
The sun is creeping its way out from the horizon, birds are beginning to chirp and there is a slight coolness in the air. It is 6 am in Maputo, Mozambique and it is the time Ernesto Matavel begins his daily route as a bus driver for the Aga Khan Academy Maputo.
“When the day begins I feel happy,” Ernesto said. “It is a fresh start to a new day.”
Ernesto began working at AKA Maputo in 2014 and has seen the evolution of the Academy as it continues to expand and develop. However, for Ernesto, the Academy is not the only thing that has been growing over the years.
“When I started at the Academy there was only a small building and now it has grown so much. Having said that, I have also gotten the opportunity to grow personally and professionally.”
When the Academy reopened for in-person learning due to COVID-19, Ernesto felt confident of the safety measures put in place.
“The Academy has done a fantastic job not only in safeguarding the students, but also the staff members like myself.”
By 2.50 pm Ernesto ends his bus route and anticipates for the next day. Although not everything is the same as it was prior to the pandemic, Ernesto is happy to be back with the AKA Maputo community, which he calls his group of friends.
“I like the work I do because I am able to do it with no problem. The community at the Academy makes me feel like we are all friends.”
