Children Dare to Dream Big

Play Video

Through this video by Agence Française de Développement (AFD), we see how our students at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo dare to dream big in the state-of-the-art facilities they have access to.

Since it opened its doors in 2013, AKA Maputo has been growing. In 2018, new facilities were opened, including bigger classrooms, extended outdoor play areas, a library, an art room and a science lab.

Never-ending adventures through the residential programme

“Each day is filled with a new adventure in the residential programme at AKA Maputo. On the weekdays we usually wake up around 6 am and get ready to go to school. Our classes end at 2.45 pm and are followed by extracurricular activities like yoga or basketball. The residential students then go for a study time for an hour where we study or do homework. After our study time we have snacks and free time to hang out with our friends. There are times when we all play tag, which is always fun because we all feel like little kids and enjoy ourselves. During our free time we can do anything we want. I usually go to the dance studio because I enjoy dancing. Sometimes we all meet on the benches in between the residences and hang out and talk to each other. After our free time, we have dinner and a small gap between dinner and our second study time where we sometimes play a game or just chat. When study time is over, we have snacks and go back to the residences. Lights out is at 9.30 pm during the weekdays and 10.30 pm on the weekends. We also have many pool parties, pajama parties, karaoke nights, movie nights and sometimes roommate quiz nights where the winners get pizza. The residence is never boring because it provides you with different types of experiences and there is always something that keeps you moving.” Tanya Kanani, Grade 10 student, Aga Khan Academy Maputo

Being a leader in the student council

Being a leader in the student council

“Ever since I found out what the student council is at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo when I was 12-years-old, it’s been my dream to be a part of it. Now that I’m in it, I love it even more. One of the things I like about being in the student council is that you’re kind of like an ambassador for the school. There are a lot of big things happening that you’re a part of and you get to be a voice for the students, which is another thing I really like. People tell me what’s going on and I get to help them, and it’s mainly the helping aspect of the student council that I really like a lot. The other thing I like about the student council is collaborating with the other members because we all come together to create change. Everyone has different talents or different things they’re good at and it’s exciting to see what ideas we come up together. Although we were unable to meet in person due to the Academy being closed because of the pandemic, we still meet on Zoom to discuss solutions or ideas to what our peers, the rest of the student body, was asking from us. We don’t have a perfect routine yet, but once school resumes to in-person and things get better, we will hold meetings every week.” Shanti Cabral, Grade 10 student, Aga Khan Academy Maputo
"We must... infuse our students with what I would call three “A’s” of modern learning - the spirit of anticipation, the spirit of adaptation and the spirit of adventure. This will happen best in learning environments which are both serious and focused on the one hand, but which are also joyous and inspiring places, operating on the cutting edge of pedagogy and knowledge."
