Supporting students' wellbeing

Meet the Aga Khan Academy Maputo’s new school counsellor, Tania Ribeiro. Tania joined the AKA Maputo in March 2021 and has been focusing on providing the Academy’s students with one-on-one mental health support that is based on individual needs. “I think wellbeing is a mixture of many factors in life — it’s about home life, social life, school life and gaining support for specific situations that may throw you off balance,” Tania said. “The idea of students seeing me is to restore that balance through the support they need.” While students develop practical life skills at the AKA Maputo, it is important that their mental wellbeing is also looked after as this later empowers the students to participate more fully and fruitfully in society as global citizens. “Working with mental wellbeing is crucial to supporting the students and investing properly into their full potential in the academic realm and in their futures,” Tania said. “If a student is struggling with depression or anxiety, their ability to focus on academics, personal and social growth is not used to its full potential because these emotions are depleting their energy.” Tania is working closely with Junior School Principal Maike Silver, Dean of Studies and interim Senior School Principal Alejandro Zepeda, and Diploma Programme Coordinator Morag Makey to develop wellbeing programmes for both Junior School and Senior School. “The work that we do at the AKA Maputo is very much geared towards tackling specific issues that prevent students from living life to the fullest,” Tania said. “If the AKA Maputo did not provide students with an inclusive, interactive and supportive academic environment, my work would be limited and difficult.”

Accessing opportunities

Since Kindergarten 3, Kawane Mondlane has been studying at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo. Now in Grade 6 at the Academy, Kawane has been exposed to various subjects and opportunities he didn’t think were possible. This, he said, he owes to the scholarship the AKA Maputo provided for him to study at the Academy. Given the AKA Maputo’s mission of serving the Mozambican community, admission to the Academy is merit-based and means-blind. This gives children from varying socio-economic backgrounds who have high potentiality, leadership qualities and the desire to foster positive societal change an opportunity to study at the Academy, accessing state-of-the-art facilities and the world-renowned International Baccalaureate curriculum. “Being at the Academy through a scholarship motivates me to try my best because I’m here to determine my future,” Kawane said. “This helps me to continue passing through all grade levels with high marks.” The AKA Maputo strives to maintain an environment that nurtures and empowers all students to become lifelong learners. “When I first got the scholarship, it was a bit difficult for me because I did not know how to speak English,” Kawane said. “But because of the friendly and encouraging environment here, I’ve learnt the language and a lot of other things that I wouldn’t have learnt in the public school system.” Kawane also said the AKA Maputo has helped him explore not only his academic interests but also his creative interests, as he has developed a passion for both technology and the arts while at the Academy. “I’m interested in technology, and I would like to be an engineer,” Kawane said. “But I also really enjoy arts and music, so I’m grateful to be able to explore and work on these three things all at once.”

“The Aga Khan has been a household name for me from a young age. Growing up, my grandfather would tell me stories about working at His Highness the Aga Khan’s stud farms in Ireland. When my cousins moved to Kenya and began attending the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, I visited them several times. I always knew I wanted to end up living and working in Africa. Walking to work in the freezing cold and rain in Ireland always made me long for Africa, so I made the decision to try and make the move. I searched online for job openings within the Aga Khan Academies and to my delight the Aga Khan Academy Maputo was looking for a Visual Arts Teacher. I was further drawn to the idea of working for the Academy due to the fantastic curriculum on offer. The International Baccalaureate strongly promotes pluralism, cultural enrichment, inclusion and leadership to create a better world for all. I was ecstatic to receive my confirmation. I began working from Ireland due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions but have enjoyed every minute of it. The Aga Khan Academy Maputo is a hard-working family, the staff are fantastic and have made me feel like I have always been a part of the team and the students are phenomenal, engaging and dedicated. I will miss my family and friends when I move to Mozambique, but I am truly excited to begin this new adventure.” Rachael Odwyer, Visual Arts Teacher, Aga Khan Academy Maputo

Finding comfort at the Academy

“When we began thinking about sending our child to school, we wanted to offer them an education that would prepare them for the world in the coming decades. With the speed of change in the global and technologically advanced world, we felt it was increasingly crucial that our child develop the ability to be disciplined in their search for knowledge and be inquirers in all of the subjects. We looked for a joyful, versatile and flexible schooling environment for our children, where the motivation to learn happens naturally and spontaneously. We came across the Aga Khan Academy Maputo and we believe we have found the school that will offer our child everything they need to succeed. The International Baccalaureate curriculum our child is exposed to at the Academy provides them with global experiences and potential opportunities for the future. The Academy’s commitment to a local and international teaching staff has reassured us that our child will have an integrated experience with language and reality. The Academy’s campus and the resources it provides to its students shows that students will be able to participate in various sporting, recreational or cultural activities. The overall quality of the campus, which is seen as a modern and safe environment, is difficult to find. Overall, the vision and mission of the Academy, along with the dedication, responsibility and motivation from the entire AKA Maputo team, gave us the comfort that our child will be educated and valued in the best way possible here.” Joel Soares Prista, parent of Grade 3 student, Aga Khan Academy Maputo
