Physically engaging activities
A holistic education includes plenty of time for sports and other physical activity. AKA Dhaka offers classes and activity time in world-class facilities, from pools to sports courts.

Sports

Students have the chance to try many sports, both competitive and non-competitive. They might train in athletics, learn ballet or a martial art, try a high dive or join a sports team. In later years they are able to focus on developing expertise in a few areas, taking on leadership and coaching responsibilities.

AKA Maputo has numerous sports facilities such as a multi-purpose court for football, basketball and badminton, along with two swimming pools. Tennis courts, a soccer field, a jungle gym for Junior School students, gym facilities and dance rooms for ballet and Taekwondo are also available for the students.

Promoting passion through sports

“In our Physical Health and Education (PHE) classes at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo, we work with the students by instilling the importance of physical exercises so they can make changes in their lives and the people around them. We also promote the mental health and cognitive development of each student through physical exercises by teaching our students the relevance of physical activity for their physical, psychological and social wellbeing. All of this is essential for children and young people to have a healthy life.

The students study various units in their PHE classes that expose them to a variety of physical exercises, allowing them to develop their own plans to achieve their individual goals. However, looking at PHE during the time of COVID-19, it is evident that safety protocols, such as social distancing, can bring some changes to what we usually do in our day-to-day classes. As teachers, we all created new safe ways to maintain the essence of our curriculum, even while using a few resources and following all safety guidelines for physical learning. Our students demonstrated such commitment when they returned to campus and the joy on their faces during the PHE lessons is remarkable. Even with the safety precaution measures, we manage to achieve our goals and bring physical, psychological and social gains to our students.”

Finding my love for football

“I have been a student at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo for eight years, having started when I was 5-years-old. Because of the Academy, I was able to identify my favourite sport, which is football. I wasn’t interested in sports when I first entered the Academy, but when we first started playing football in our Physical Health and Education classes, I really loved it and saw that I was talented. When the Academy first opened, there was just one football field and equipment such as footballs. However, there are now three football fields, as well as several other resources and equipment now. I like playing football because it boosts my mood and makes me feel much better. Football has helped me socialise with others and make new friends. Aside from this sport, we have other facilities and equipment on campus for basketball, volleyball, a tennis court, badminton and many other sports. Because of the Academy, I was able to discover my areas of interest and passion.” Aayan Popatiya, Grade 7 student, Aga Khan Academy Dhaka
