A delegation from the Academies meets government and university leadership in Texas, USA

Partnerships

As part of a large and experienced educational network, the Academies benefit from considerable academic, intellectual and financial support. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), the International Baccalaureate (IB), governments, universities, development agencies and other schools all contribute to innovative and rigorous education at the Academies.

“The Aga Khan Academies are very innovative; these schools are focused on educating future public, private and civil society leaders who can support the development of a democratic, tolerant and pluralistic society”

The AKA Maputo campus.
The AKA Maputo campus consists of state-of-the-art facilities on an expansive, 50-acre site.

AKDN opened its first schools in 1905. Its education agency now provides education to over 54,000 students from preschoolers to postgraduates, bringing considerable experience to the Academies. The Aga Khan University and the University of Central Asia lend their expertise, while other AKDN agencies also offer input.

“The AKDN... works internationally in highly diverse endeavours – health care and medical science, agricultural development and urban renewal, business and finance, culture and education. These far-flung AKDN programmes can be thought of as part of an extended global campus for the Academies. I think for example, of the rich experiences that our students of the Mombasa Academy already have enjoyed through entities such as the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme – learning there to think creatively about complex social and economic challenges, while also being steeped in a powerful ethic of service.”

Academic Partnerships

AKDN partners closely with the IB, which has similar guiding principles and forms a framework for the Academies’ curriculum. The IB, meanwhile, gains from AKDN’s real-world humanitarian experience. In 2008, His Highness the Aga Khan was invited to deliver the IB’s Peterson Lecture.

“The IB programme incarnates a powerful idea, the confidence that education can reshape the way in which the world thinks about itself.”

Partnerships with prestigious universities enable the Academies to benefit from best practices in teaching and learning, and innovative approaches to teacher education.

Working With Governments
The Academies work in harmony with the governing bodies of their host country, currently
  • the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Kenya;
  • the Ministry of Education and Human Development Mozambique;
  • the Department of School Education, Telangana, India.
Locally, they support the nations’ educational strategies to help strengthen the quality of education and ensure high standards of practice in teaching and learning.

The network of Academies also benefits from agreements with international organisations on areas of mutually beneficial collaboration. One example is the partnership that was developed between the Ontario Ministry of Education, Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities, the AKA and the Aga Khan Museum (AKM). This partnership:
  • Allows experienced Ontario teachers to spend a year or more at an Academy. They help build outstanding teaching and learning practice, while gaining experience teaching a different curriculum in a new context.
  • Opens doors to Ontario universities for high-achieving Academy students with limited means. The Ministry provides full tuition waivers and the AKA covers other costs.
  • Enhances the curriculum within Ontario schools, drawing on the AKM’s teaching collection and the Academies’ expertise in fostering pluralism
