A unique challenge

“The Academy’s distinct hallmarks are the Aga Khan Strands of ethics, cultures, governance and civil society, pluralism and economics for development. These Strands not only add a unique aspect to the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum offered at the Academies, but they also play a significant role in shaping working professionals to become leaders in their field of expertise.

My time at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa has been an incredible opportunity to learn and grow. The fellowship enabled me to challenge myself and acquire new skills by working with diverse groups within and outside the Academy. I especially enjoy serving as a Diploma Programme mentor, curating virtual fundraising campaigns and organising TEDxYouth@AKAMombasa. Being a part of this unique working model, where I am able to exercise flexibility to try new things and propose creative solutions to challenges, has been a rewarding experience.”

The award recognises students with superior academic achievement, leadership skills and involvement in community service.

“I would say my experience at the Academy was like a springboard into my future,” Lilian said. “I had amazing mentors and none of what I achieved would have been possible without their support.”

The importance of working with the community is one of many things Lilian has continued to carry with her from her time at the Academy, which is evident in the community-based initiatives she has undertaken since graduating.

“As I’ve grown, I’ve realised that my continuous involvement with community organisations here in Vancouver is in part influenced by that,” Lilian states. “It is through community work that I learn more about myself and the world around me.”

From Tajikistan to Mombasa

“I look back at the days in my childhood when I had to hike over six kilometers on the mountains during the frosty winters, to get to my school in Tajikistan. By the time I turned twelve, my life turned completely around when I got accepted to the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa with full financial aid and travelled thousands of miles away from home. Not only did I not have to commute to school in the cold anymore, but I was also given the opportunity to sculpt my raw mind and character while learning from a very diverse community of peers and teachers in the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

The Academy cultivated me into a self-aware, empathetic, organised and balanced individual – it allowed me to develop my primary life goal of going back to Tajikistan and contributing to its development. Aside from developing into a responsible global citizen, the Academy nurtured in me an endless list of vital qualities and skills which have helped me become the person I am today.

Currently, I am specialising in Architectural Studies at the University of Toronto as I am a recipient of the Ontario Tuition Waiver and the Aga Khan Development Network scholarship, which I received because the Academy believes in my potential. I am determined to use this opportunity to become an architect who will completely transform the urban landscape of Badakhshan and design buildings which will not only develop the land physically, but also progress the society’s thinking. “
